Sometimes simply called ‘Pool’, eight ball is a pocket billiards game that is popular in much of the world. While the game has several variations from country to country, standard Eight Ball is one of the most competitive games played throughout the world. This variation of Billiards was invented around 1900 in the United States of America, and has become increasingly popular since then.
Pool is played on a large table measuring 9 feet by 4 and a half feet. The table is covered in felt fabric and rimmed with a border to keep the balls on the table. 8 Ball Pool consists of sixteen balls: 15 playable balls and one unmarked white cue ball. There are seven solid colored balls numbered 1-7, seven striped colored balls numbered 9-15, a solid black 8 ball, and a white cue ball.
The ultimate object of the game is to legally pocket the black eight ball in any of the tables six pockets. This can only be done after all the players balls are removed from the table.
How To Play 8 Ball Pool
To start the game, players must set up the balls on the table. All of the balls are placed randomly in a triangular rack, with the exception of the 8 ball pool ball, which must be placed in the center of the ball formation. The only other rule for racking is that the two back corner balls must be a stripe and a solid. One person is then chosen to break the balls by shooting the white cue ball at the racked ball formation.
If the player who breaks the balls accidentally pockets the 8 ball pool ball, the opposing player may call for a re-rack and attempt to break the balls again. To play 8 ball pool, one player is stripes and one player is solids. This is usually determined by the first ball to pocket on a break. Not until all of a player’s balls are pocketed may they attempt to pocket the 8 ball.
There are several ways to win while playing 8 ball pool. If a player legally pockets the 8 ball ,they win. If a player illegally pockets the eight ball, their opponent wins. If a player knocks the 8 ball off of the table, the opponent wins. If a player makes a foul or scratches while attempting to pocket the 8 ball, the opponent wins.
